Archbishop Murphy gives up State 2A berth

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

SEATTLE – Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett must forfeit its football season – and vacate its berth in the state playoffs – after the Class 2A power reported itself for using a player who did not undergo a proper physical examination.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association made the ruling Friday.

The executive board’s ruling upheld the decision of a WIAA district appeals board, the District 1 board and the Cascade Conference.

The ruling requires Archbishop Murphy to forfeit all regular-season games, its conference championship and its berth in today’s round of the State 2A playoffs against Mark Morris High School of Longview.

That game is canceled. Bellingham High School, which lost to Archbishop Murphy 28-6 in the preliminary round of the playoffs last weekend, will play Mark Morris Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium.
