Huskies run past Utah
Jon Brockman set career highs with 31 points and 18 rebounds to lead Washington to an 83-77 victory over Utah Wednesday night in the second round of the NIT Season Tipoff in Seattle.
Justin Dentmon scored 16 points, including a leaning, scooping shot in the lane that gave the Huskies the lead with 1:29 left and two free throws that put the Huskies (2-0) up 78-75 with 50.3 seconds left.
Lawrence Borha missed an open 3-pointer that would have tied the game with 36 seconds remaining for Utah (2-1). Johnnie Bryant scored 18 points – 14 in the second half – before fouling out immediately after Borha’s miss for the Utes.
Quincy Pondexter then hit two clinching free throws with 31.8 seconds left to send Washington, which went 19-13 and missed both the NCAA tournament and NIT last season, to New York for this tournament’s semifinals Wednesday against Texas A&M.
(1) North Carolina 72, Davidson 68: At Charlotte, N.C., the top-ranked Tar Heels avoided an early-season upset.
Wayne Ellington scored 20 points and made key plays late to help North Carolina (1-0) avoid a major scare and a subpar second half from Tyler Hansbrough to beat the Wildcats (1-1).
Hansbrough had 14 points and 14 rebounds, but he was ineffective in the second half and got into foul trouble.
(7) Tennessee 101, Arkansas-Monticello 44: At Knoxville, Tenn., Tyler Smith scored 15 points and JaJuan Smith added 14 to help the Volunteers (2-0) beat the Boll Weevils (0-1) in the first round of the StubHub Legends Classic.
Tennessee used a 20-5 run to start the game and put it out of reach.
Deron Brown led the Division II Boll Weevils with 11 points and five assists before fouling out.
The Volunteers shot 60 percent from the floor while holding Arkansas-Monticello to 25 percent.
(12) Michigan State 83, Louisiana-Monroe 65: At East Lansing, Mich., freshman Chris Allen scored 17 points and All-American Drew Neitzel had 15 to help the Spartans (2-0) withstand a 3-point barrage and beat the Warhawks (1-2).
Michigan State blew a 47-35 halftime lead and trailed 57-56 with 13:46 left. But with several second and third opportunities, Michigan State scored the next 11 points and held Louisiana-Monroe scoreless for 6:42.
(15) Texas A&M 81, UTEP 76: At College Station, Texas, Josh Carter scored 23 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer, and the Aggies (3-0) held off the Miners (2-1) in the preseason NIT.
UTEP was led by Stefon Jackson, who had 27 points.
Texas A&M made just 10 field goals and missed seven free throws in the first half.
(25) Butler 76, Indiana State 48: At Indianapolis, A.J. Graves scored 26 points and the Bulldogs (2-0) beat the Sycamores (1-1).
Graves shot 8 for 12 from the field and made six 3-pointers.
Mike Green had 15 points and eight rebounds and Pete Campbell added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Women
(2) Connecticut 91, Holy Cross 36: At Storrs, Conn., Maya Moore had 31 points and the Huskies (2-0) blew out the Crusaders (0-2).
The freshman, who had 21 in UConn’s opener, had 22 at halftime on 11-of-12 shooting. She was 14 of 16 for the game and played 4 minutes after halftime.
Tina Charles had 13 points for the Huskies.
Laura Aloisi led Holy Cross with 10 points.
