Privateers knock off Wolfpack

T.J. Worley banked in a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left and New Orleans became the latest mid-major to spring an upset by beating No. 21 North Carolina State 65-63 on Sunday night in Raleigh, N.C.

In a wild finish that had three lead changes in the final 15 seconds, the Privateers erased a late seven-point deficit by scoring eight straight points in the final 1:48.

(1) North Carolina 107, Iona 72: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Tyler Hansbrough had 27 points while Danny Green scored 15 to lead the Tar Heels (2-0) past the Gaels (0-3).

Wayne Ellington added 14 for the Tar Heels, who never trailed

(6) Louisville 84, Jackson St. 53: At Louisville, Ky., Earl Clark had 20 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Cardinals (2-0) over the Tigers (0-4).

Andre McGee matched his career-high with 18 points for Louisville.

(8) Indiana 100, Longwood 49: At Bloomington, Ind., freshman Eric Gordon contributed 21 points, Jordan Crawford added 16 and the Hoosiers (2-0) beat the Lancers (2-2) in the opening round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

(16) Texas 100, Arkansas-Monticello 52: At Austin, Texas, A.J. Abrams scored a career-high 30 points and the Longhorns (3-0) cruised past the Division II Boll Weevils (0-2).

(18) Arkansas 70, Virginia Commonwealth 60: At San Juan, Puerto Rico, Sonny Weems scored 16 points and Patrick Beverley added 13 to lead the Razorbacks (3-1) over the Rams (2-2) in a consolation game at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

(24) Villanova 70, Bucknell 64: At Philadelphia, Shane Clark scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Scottie Reynolds added 15 points and the Wildcats (2-0) held off the Bison (2-1).

Women

(1) Tennessee 92, (21) Texas 67: At Knoxville, Tenn., Angie Bjorklund scored 16 points before fouling out as the Lady Vols (3-0) dominated the Longhorns (2-1).

Candace Parker added 21 points for Tennessee.

(3) Maryland 75, (4) LSU 62: At College Park, Md., Kristi Toliver scored 23 and Laura Harper had 14 of her 16 points in the second half to help the Terrapins (5-0) beat the Tigers(3-1) in the Preseason WNIT championship.

(5) Stanford 81, Utah 77 (2OT): At Salt Lake City, Jayne Appel scored four of her 30 points early in the second overtime and the Cardinal (3-0) avoided an upset to the Utes (1-1).

(6) Rutgers 67, (14) George Washington 42: At Washington, Matee Ajavon made four of five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, and Kia Vaughn had 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Scarlet Knights (2-1) to a victory over the Colonials (3-1).

(7) North Carolina 97, Syracuse 72: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Rashanda McCants had career highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels (5-0) over the Orange (1-1) in the WNIT.

(10) Duke 84, UNC Greensboro 39: At Durham, N.C., freshman Krystal Thomas had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and the Blue Devils (3-0) beat the Spartans (0-3).
