Area Roundup: Lumsden leads Waves to victory over Bulldogs
After losing the first game, the Pepperdine University volleyball team regrouped and defeated Gonzaga 19-30, 30-14, 30-28, 30-25 Thursday in a West Coast Conference match at GU’s Martin Center.
Rachel Lumsden had a team-high 21 kills and 12 digs and Kiah Fiers dished out 55 assists to lead the Waves.
Julie Rubenstein added 14 kills and 11 digs and Cassi Chamberlain chipped in 10 kills for Pepperdine.
The Bulldogs were led by Heather Dunn, who had 52 assists and 14 digs.
Michelle Boevers added 15 kills and Becky Jones contributed 11 kills and 11 digs for Gonzaga.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 11-7 overall and 0-3 in the WCC. The Waves improved to 10-4 and 2-0 in conference play.

Football
Defensive lineman Elbert Shumake and wide receiver/defensive back Roshawn Marshall have been added to the Spokane Shock roster.
The 6-foot-1, 318-pound Shumake finished his collegiate career at Pikeville College. In 12 games at Pikeville, Shumake played in 12 games and recorded 51 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles.
During his NFL pro day in 2007, Shumake ran the 40-yard dash in 5.05 seconds and bench-pressed 225 pounds 24 times.
Marshall (5-10, 198) was a member of the practice squad for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League during the 2007 season.
In 2006, Marshall completed his collegiate career splitting time between the College of the Canyons and Central Missouri State University.
During his time at CMSU, Marshall set the single-season punt return record with four returned for touchdowns, including an 82-yard return.
