In brief: Swede takes four-shot lead at Texas Open
Jesper Parnevik followed his career-best opening 61 with a 5-under-par 65 on Friday to take a four-stroke lead midway through the Texas Open in San Antonio.
The 42-year-old Swede had a 14-under 126 total, the lowest 36-hole score on the PGA Tour this year and just a stroke off the tour record of 125 held by Tiger Woods, Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Lehman and Corey Pavin. Parnevik is seeking his first victory since taking the 2001 Honda Classic for his fifth tour title.
Sweden’s Mathias Gronberg was second after a 65 in dry, calm conditions at LaCantera Golf Club Resort Course.
He eagled the par-5 14th with a 16-foot putt before birdies on 16 and 18 with putts inside 10 feet.
“Lorena Ochoa made a 6-footer to save par on the 16th hole after her tee shot ended up in a bunker, then birdied No. 17 to reach 5 under on the second day of the LPGA’s Longs Drugs Challenge at Danville, Calif., leaving her a stroke behind defending champion Karrie Webb and Canadian Lorie Kane.
Webb and Kane shot 69s to finish at 6 under. Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., is tied for 16th at 143 after shooting a 71. Rathdrum’s Tracy Hanson shot her second consecutive 73.
“Loren Roberts capped a bogey-free 66 with a 2-foot birdie putt on the troublesome 18th hole, an appropriate finish to a steady round that gave him a two-shot lead over Scott Hoch at the midpoint of the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md.
