NFL: Broncos’ Henry under fire

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Travis Henry returned to the field in Englewood, Colo., Friday for practice amid uncertainty over his future with the Denver Broncos.

Henry, the NFL’s leading rusher, is trying to prevent the league from suspending him over the results of a drug test, according to federal court records. He said he couldn’t comment on the case on the advice of his attorney.

“If you got any football questions, I’m more than willing to answer,” Henry said.

Henry plans to play Sunday against San Diego. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan thought that was a strong possibility, as long as Henry’s injured right ankle and knee are up to it.

Henry, listed as questionable on the injury report, was back at practice for the first time since injuring his leg against Indianapolis last week.

“If there is no setback with where he’s at, he will play,” Shanahan said.

However, Broncos receiver Javon Walker will not play against the Chargers, Shanahan said. Walker still has swelling in his surgically repaired right knee.

He thought he’d be ready for the Pittsburgh game Oct. 21. The Broncos have a bye week after San Diego.

Ward will sit out

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward will miss his second game in a row Sunday because of a right knee injury.

Ward has been unable to practice since he was hurt Sept. 23 against San Francisco.

Before sitting out last weekend’s 21-14 loss at Arizona, Ward had missed only three games to injury in his 10-year NFL career.

Ward will miss the Steelers’ first game against Seattle since he was the MVP of their 21-10 win over the Seahawks in the February 2006 Super Bowl.

Bills’ Price needs surgery

Buffalo Bills receiver Peerless Price’s season is likely over after he was scheduled to have surgery to repair a disc in his neck.

Coach Dick Jauron said the team will place Price on injured reserve, making him the ninth Bills player – and fourth starter – on the season-ending list five weeks into the campaign.

The announcement came as a surprise, because Price had not missed practice until Friday. He was noticeably stiff – unable to turn his neck – when he spoke to reporters at his locker Wednesday.

Delhomme doubtful

Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme did not practice again and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against New Orleans.

Delhomme hasn’t thrown a football since straining his right elbow Sept. 23 against Atlanta. Last week against Tampa Bay, he was the No. 3 quarterback behind starter David Carr and backup Matt Moore.

Moss misses practice

Washington Redskins receiver Santana Moss didn’t practice and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against Detroit.

Moss hurt his groin in the final quarter of a loss to the New York Giants two weeks ago and has not practiced since.

The Redskins were off last week.
