Packers suffer first loss

The Green Bay Packers coughed up five turnovers and their chance to remain undefeated, blowing a second-half lead and losing 27-20 to the Chicago Bears on Sunday night.

Brian Griese threw the go-ahead touchdown to tight end Desmond Clark with 2:05 left. Brett Favre drove the Packers to the Bears 31, but threw an incomplete pass and an interception to safety Brandon McGowan in the end zone to end the game.

Green Bay’s loss leaves New England (5-0), Indianapolis (5-0) and Dallas (4-0) as the remaining undefeated team this season. New England defeated Cleveland 34-17 on Sunday and Indianapolis beat Tampa Bay 33-14. Dallas plays at Buffalo tonight.

Whitworth back in rankings

The Whitworth Pirates are ranked 25th in this week’s D3football.com Top 25 after their thrilling 28-21 victory Saturday over previously undefeated Pacific Lutheran.

Mount Union remains a unanimous No. 1.

Everyone loves LSU; Cal No. 2

No doubt about it, LSU is No. 1.

As for the rest of the Top 25, five wild weeks of college football have taken quite a toll.

The Tigers were a unanimous choice for the top spot in The Associated Press rankings released Sunday, receiving all 65 first-place votes from the media panel. The last unanimous No. 1 during the regular season was Ohio State in December.

California is the new No. 2, with its best showing in the AP Top 25 since 1951, when the Golden Bears were No. 1.

Ohio State is No. 3 and No. 4 Boston College has its highest ranking since Doug Flutie had the Eagles fourth in 1984. South Florida is now No. 5.

On Saturday, a week after half the top 10 and nine ranked teams lost, another four top-10 teams and 11 ranked teams overall went down Saturday.
