Whitworth beats Pacific

Matt Friesen scored on a free kick in the 76th minute to give the Whitworth Pirates a 1-0 Northwest Conference men’s soccer victory over the Pacific Boxers Sunday at Forest Grove, Ore.

Friesen earned the opportunity when Curtis Flournoy was fouled at the top of the 18-yard box. Friesen set up and hooked his shot just to the left of Pacific goalkeeper Andrew Stevermer for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Whitworth (10-2-1, 8-1) held a 19-8 advantage in shots. Pacific (5-5-2, 3-4-2) managed only one shot in the first half.

•Colin Jennings scored on a header off a corner kick, giving the visiting San Diego Toreros (5-6, 1-1) a 1-0 West Coast Conference overtime victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-3-1, 3-1-1).

•Konner Jackson scored three goals and Brian Rosco and Cole Abramson scored two apiece to lead the North Idaho Cardinals to an 8-0 non-conference victory over the Eastern Washington Club Team at Coeur d’Alene.

Women’s soccer

Anna Sandman recorded her school-record fifth shutout of the season to lead the Idaho Vandals (4-8-1, 0-1-1) to a scoreless Western Athletic Conference tie with the Louisiana Tech Techsters (2-9-1, 0-1-1) at Ruston, La.

•Shuree Hyatt scored early and Robin Alexander scored late to lead the Washington Huskies (4-8, 1-1) to a 2-0 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Arizona Wildcats (5-8, 0-2) at Tucson, Ariz.

•Alexandra Elston’s goal off a free kick in overtime gave the Arizona State Sun Devils (8-5, 2-0) a 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Washington State Cougars (8-2-2, 1-1) at Tempe, Ariz.

•Sarah Vallen scored two goals and assisted on the other and Karla Lee had a goal and two assists to lead the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (6-4-4) to a 3-2 Big Sky Conference victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles (5-6) at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Chelsey Hannesson and Nicole De Shazo scored for EWU.

•Jenny Krzymowski scored in the first minute of the second half to give the Whitworth Pirates (12-1, 9-1) a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory over the Pacific Boxers (4-9-1, 2-8) at Forest Grove, Ore.

•Rachel Lopez and Ashlee Barton scored to give the North Idaho Cardinals (7-4-3) a 2-0 non-conference victory over the Great Falls Lady Argos at Coeur d’Alene.

Running

Chris Stelzer covered the course in 2 hours, 33 minutes, 20 seconds to win the Bloomsday Roadrunners Club Spokane Marathon.

Julie Gilchrist was the top female in 3:03:47.

Rowing

The Washington State University women’s varsity eight took third-place in the Championship Eight race of the Head of the Oklahoma crew race at Oklahoma City. The second varsity eight was fourth. Teams from Australia and Canada were first and second.
