Bail set for couple who fled after child sex charges filed

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Bail was set Monday at a combined $750,000 for a couple who fled to British Columbia as authorities prepared to arrest the husband in a child sex abuse investigation.

Arraignment was scheduled Nov. 6 for Jeff Spady, 40, charged with first-, second- and third-degree child rape and custodial interference, and Kim Spady, 39, facing charges of custodial interference, during their initial appearance in Clark County Superior Court.

They remained in jail with bail at $500,000 for Spady and $250,000 for his wife.

Sheriff’s deputies went to northeast Montana over the weekend to get the Spadys, who were arrested at a trailer in a park in western Saskatchewan on Sept. 21, three weeks after they left their home outside Amboy. A week after their arrest they were transferred to U.S. custody in Montana.

The couple’s four children were taken into protective custody in Canada, returned to Clark County and placed in foster care.

Investigators said the family entered Canada from Idaho on Sept. 7, a day after charges against Spady were filed. The hunt for the Spadys was featured on the television show “America’s Most Wanted.”

The case is based on accusations by an 18-year-old daughter that he raped her from the time she was 10 until she was 16.
