Prep Roundup: GNL volleyball requires tiebreaker
After the final night of Great Northern League volleyball matches on Thursday, the seedings heading into the District 7 2A tournament remain unclear.
West Valley, Pullman and Colville all won to force a round-robin tiebreaker at 5 p.m. Monday at Cheney High School to determine the top three seeds.
Kerri Spangenberg had a match-high 13 aces and dished out 28 assists to lead Pullman to a 25-16, 25-10, 25-12 win over host Cheney. Whitney Hodge had eight kills and Allison Oviatt added 11 digs for the Greyhounds.
Cheney’s Blackhawks are finished for the season.
West Valley beat Clarkston 25-13, 25-22, 25-11 at WV. Melissa Mauro had 13 kills and Alyssa Wold dished out 13 assists to lead the Eagles.
Colville’s 20-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19 win over host Riverside made the tiebreaker a reality. Emilee Lepp had 17 kills and Ashley Christie dished out 26 assists to lead the Indians.
Elsewhere in the league, Melissa Veale had 14 kills and Ariana Obert added 22 digs to guide Deer Park to a 25-14, 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-13 win over visiting Medical Lake. Carly Dorshorst had 11 kills to lead the Cardinals.
“Lind-Ritzville defeated St. George’s 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16 to open District 7 2B playoff action at St. George’s School. The Broncos advance to play Davenport, which beat Selkirk 25-10, 25-13, 25-6, in the second round Saturday behind Mariah Milke’s six aces and 22 assists.. … Elsewhere, Ashley Warnecke had 10 kills and seven assists and Madison Peterson added 13 digs as Wilbur-Creston topped Liberty 25-13, 25-10, 25-18. … Hannah Descoteaux dished out 28 assists to lead Northwest Christian to a 13-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-9, 15-12 victory over Springdale. The Crusaders advance to play Wilbur-Creston at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Chargers staved off elimination with a 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 19-17 win over Reardan and will advance to play in Saturday’s second round. Reardan is eliminated. … St. George’s beat Selkirk 25-12, 25-14, 25-16 and will play in the second round. Selkirk was eliminated.
“Wallace and Kootenai went 1-2 in pool play at the Idaho State 1A championships in Lewiston and were eliminated.
Cross country
Lakeside’s boys and girls took first place at the 1A regional meet at Chewelah Golf Course. Newport’s Joey Ward was the individual champion, finishing the 3.1-mile course in a course-record 15 minutes, 53 seconds. Lakeside’s Kyle Johnson was second, finishing in 16:01. Teammate Tim Welch was third in 16:08. Newport’s Grizzlies finished second, followed by Chewelah and Freeman. For the girls, Lakeside’s Kayloni Jones also set a course record, finishing in 19:03. Omak’s Kaitlynn Pecha came in second, 11 seconds behind. Chelan’s Gaby Guillen was third in 19:31. Chelan was second, followed by Omak and Freeman. The top four teams and 20 individuals advance to the state meet Nov. 3 in Pasco.
“St. John-Endicott’s David Fischer finished in 17:34.6 to lead the Eagles to first place at the District 9 2B/1B meet in Pomeroy. Asotin’s Grant Fowler took second in 18:21.2. Tri-Cities Prep finished second. The top two teams and 10 individuals advance to the state meet in Pasco. On the girls’ side, Jessi Johnson crossed in 22:21.4 to lead Asotin to first place. The team champion and the top five individuals advance to state.
Baseball
University junior Billy Moon has made an oral commitment to play at Gonzaga University.
He said he was recruited as both a left-handed pitcher and for his bat.
“They came onto me for my hitting ability but said I could probably pitch, too,” Moon said.
Moon is a finesse pitcher and outfielder who hit a team-high .419 last season for the Titans and was 9-1 with a 2.49 ERA and 83 strikeouts.
He said he batted better than .500 for the Spokane Bandits in American Legion baseball.
