Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Trey Elder threw three touchdown passes and rushed for 82 yards, helping Appalachian State pull away from Northern Arizona 34-21 on Saturday in Boone, N.C., to extend Division I’s longest winning streak to 17 games.

Two weeks after stunning Michigan and a week after beating up on Division II Lenoir-Rhyne, the Mountaineers (3-0) held only a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter in their first game against a Football Championship Subdivision – formerly Division I-AA – team.

But two turnovers allowed the Mountaineers, the top-ranked team in the FCS, to take control of the Lumberjacks (1-2).

Montana State 61, Dixie State 7: Jack Rolovich passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns, three running backs scored, and the Bobcats (1-1) returned a blocked field goal, a punt and an interception for a score in a victory over the Division II Rebels (2-2) in Bozeman, Mont.

MSU started the scoring with a field goal and a safety and scored their final TD on a 62-yard interception return by true freshman linebacker Dan Ogden.

San Diego 49, Northern Colorado 6: At San Diego, Josh Johnson threw six touchdown passes, including four to Wes Doyle, to lead the Toreros (3-0) to a romp over the Bears (0-3).

Johnson completed 23 of 31 for 281 yards and ran for 147 yards in three quarters of play.

Cal Poly 47, Weber State 19: Jonathan Dally threw a school-record six touchdown passes, including four to Ramses Barden and the Mustangs (1-2) routed the Wildcats (0-2) in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Barden had TD catches of 9, 24, 9 and 67 yards, finishing with 219 yards on nine receptions.

Portland State 35, Sacramento State 24: The Vikings (1-2, 1-0) got a late TD catch by Tremayne Kirkland and an interception return by Jordan Senn to rally for a victory over the Hornets (0-2, 0-1) in a conference opener in Portland.
