Prep Roundup: Nelson scorches course

Shadle Park’s Andrea Nelson ran the third-fastest 2 1/2 miles in the history of the Highlander Invitational with a time of 14 minutes, 8 seconds at Shadle Park on Saturday.

Baylee Mires (Mead) finished the course in 14:53, good for third place.

Sara Stenerson (Mead), Kayloni Jones (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls), Courtney Zalud (Mt. Spokane), Stevie Gildehaus (University), Elizabeth Fall (North Central) and Angie Whalen (Post Falls) rounded out the top 10. Sandra Martinez (Davis) finished second, 10 seconds behind Nelson.

Davis earned the girls team title with 118 points. Mead followed with 162 points. Mt. Spokane (190), Shadle (198) and Big Sky (205) made up the top five teams. Cheney (212) placed ninth, U-Hi (253) finished 10th, Ferris (312) came in 14th and Post Falls finished 17th.

In the boys division, Mitch Chandler of Riverside won the individual title in 12:37. Lakeside’s Tim Welch finished 6 seconds behind.

Shadle claimed the team title with 118 points. Dan Renz (Shadle) finished fourth in 12:47. Ferris came in second with 131 points. Mt. Spokane (136), Cheney (137) and Kamiakin (139) completed the top five. Mead (209) placed 11th, U-Hi (251) finished 16th and Post Falls (379) came in 20th.

Grant Fowler (Asotin) finished first at the Clarkston Seaport Invitational in 16:29. Moscow’s Cody Wendt finished second at 16:39. Pullman’s Micah Adams, Josh Cowgill and Xingyu Zhang placed sixth through eighth followed by a trio of Moscow runners, Brian Morra, Andrew Fife and Dakota Wallen. Moscow edged Pullman for the boys team title with 42 points. Pullman finished with 46 points. Clarkston earned third place with 102 points. In the girls division, Moscow’s Julia Veseth won the individual title in 19:28. Veseth’s teammate, Casey Dail finished second at 20:25. Victoria Hokenson (Lewiston), Kaitlin Greene (Pullman) and Sandy Martin (Lewiston) rounded out the top five. Moscow won the team title with 28 points. No runner finished lower than 12th for Moscow. Lewiston (63) and Pullman (70) finished second and third, respectively.

Football

Colville scored 26 points in the first quarter on its way to a 40-6 non-league win against Kingston at Ellensburg. Marc Smith opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown run for Colville. Casey Cox added two more touchdown runs in the opening quarter and fellow sophomore Brock Dotts scored twice for Colville in the second quarter, once on a 43-yard run.

Volleyball

Coeur d’Alene beat Colville 25-16, 25-14 for third place in the Lakeland Invitational in Rathdrum. Hanford won the championship with a 25-15, 21-25, 15-12 win over La Jolla. In the fifth-place game, Pullman defeated Lake City 25-22, 26-24.

“Northport beat Cusick 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 in the championship game of the Curlew Tournament. Republic secured third place with a 27-25, 21-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-12 win over Curlew.

“St. Maries won the championship of the Okanogan Tournament with a 15-25, 27-25, 21-19 victory against Colfax. Michelle Guidry led St. Maries with 76 assists, 16 digs and five blocks. Shawna Heath added 62 kills, 17 digs and 11 blocks and Paula Robinson-Blumel earned 47 digs. Okanogan placed fifth with a 17-25, 25-8, 15-10 win against Omak. Lynden Christian earned third by defeating Zillah 14-25, 25-21, 15-11.

Boys soccer

Lake City outshot visiting Lakeland 17-0 and scored two goals in the first half on its way to a 5-0 Inland Empire League win. Luke Torretta and Ryan Hague scored within 10 minutes of each other to push Lake City to an early lead. The Timberwolves kept the pressure on in the second half with three more goals. Hague finished with a goal and an assist.

Girls soccer

Lake City scored twice in the second half and benefited from a Lakeland own goal in a 3-0 IEL victory. The Timberwolves outshot visiting Lakeland 17-8. Lake City improved to 4-1-0 in league play and Lakeland fell to 1-5-1.
