Thome belts 500th home run

Jim Thome knew his 500th homer would be special. He had no idea it would be a game-winner, too.

Thome hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to give the Chicago White Sox a 9-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels at Chicago, becoming the 23rd player — and third this season — to reach 500 home runs.

“Just can’t believe it. I really can’t,” Thome said. “I would never have imagined doing that as a walk-off.”

Thome made it to the milestone in 6,809 at-bats, the fourth-fewest among members of the 500-homer club behind Mark McGwire (5,487), Babe Ruth (5,801) and Harmon Killebrew (6,671).

Alabama returns to Top 25

Nick Saban needed three games to get Alabama back in the Top 25.

The Crimson Tide jumped into The Associated Press poll Sunday at No. 16, its first time in the rankings since the final poll of the 2005 season.

Saban, lured from the Miami Dolphins with a $4 million per year contract, earned his first important win with the Tide on Saturday night. Alabama blew a big lead to Arkansas then responded with a late rally of its own to beat the Razorbacks 41-38 in front of a swooning Bryant-Denny Stadium crowd.

At the top of the poll, No. 1 Southern California recouped some of the first-place votes it lost to No. 2 LSU in the previous two weeks.

Florida slipped past Oklahoma into the third spot.
