NWC honors Whit defenders

Marc Grow, instrumental in the defensive effort that helped Whitworth record its first football shutout since 2003, is the Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

The senior linebacker from Warden was in on six tackles, returned a fumble 10 yards for a touchdown, intercepted a pass at his own goal line and was part of a 10-yard sack as the Pirates defeated La Verne, Calif., 34-0. Whitworth limited La Verne to one yard rushing.

Men’s soccer

Ben Rotert, a senior who helped Whitworth limited two opponents to five shots on goal in two shutout wins, is the Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He personally prevented one goal against Linfield with a sliding kick that kept the ball out of the net.
