Chiefs need quick turnaround
Today will be no day of rest for the Spokane Chiefs.
The Chiefs, down 1-0 to the Vancouver Giants in their Western Hockey League Western Conference semifinal series, will take the ice tonight at the Arena for the second game of the best-of-7 series with the defending Memorial Cup champions.
After tonight, the series heads to Vancouver for games 3, 4 and 5 (if a fifth is necessary).

NCAA can’t bare it
Hooters of America Inc. is not advertising in the Final Four tournament program because the NCAA asked the company to remove a picture of a “Hooters Girl” from its proposed ad.
Company spokesman Mike McNeil said in a statement that the full-page ad, also featuring television commentator Dick Vitale, was scheduled to run on Page 4 of the program.
But the ad will be pulled because the restaurant chain would not run it without one of its trademark waitresses, who wear low-cut T-shirts and short shorts.
“That would be like telling General Motors you can advertise but don’t show a picture of a car,” McNeil said.
Montgomery crosses Bay
Mike Montgomery knows his surprising move across San Francisco Bay won’t sit well with certain fans of both Stanford and California. He’s now a traitor to some Cardinal supporters, and he’s still a carpetbagging enemy to other Golden Bears.
But Cal’s new basketball coach thinks a few victories should resolve even the oldest grudges in Berkeley, where he’s in charge of raising the Bears to the same heights he reached at Stanford.
The veteran coach has agreed to a six-year contract at Cal nearly four years after he left Stanford for a dismal stint with the Golden State Warriors. Montgomery won 393 games and four Pac-10 titles at Stanford.
Montgomery replaces Ben Braun, who was fired after 12 seasons at Cal. The Golden Bears finished ninth in the Pac-10 this season.
