Magic clinch No. 3 seed
Hedo Turkoglu scored 23 points, Rashard Lewis added 21 and the Orlando Magic locked up the Eastern Conference’s No. 3 playoff seed with a 101-86 win Saturday over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Cleveland.
The Magic, who have sat behind Boston and Detroit in the standings for much of the season, won despite getting only four points on 1-of-8 shooting from All-Star center Dwight Howard – 17 less than his average. Orlando’s defense, though, was the difference.
The Magic held Cleveland to 14 points in the fourth quarter and didn’t let Cavaliers superstar LeBron James get his first points of the period until there was 1:48 left. By then, Orlando was up by double digits and in cruise control.
James, who has been bothered by back spasms, finished with 17 points (on 6-of-22 shooting), nine assists and seven rebounds. But for the second straight game, he wasn’t able to score as he usually does and his teammates didn’t give him any help.
Cleveland was 4 of 23 in the fourth quarter, one game after the Cavs blew a 17-point second-half lead in a loss to Chicago.
Jameer Nelson had 16 points and nine assists for the Magic, who won 40 games last season and are now two victories from their first 50-win season since 1995-96.
Delonte West scored 19 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas 18 for Cleveland, which has dropped five of seven.
Celtics 101, Bobcats 78: At Charlotte, N.C., Leon Powe had 22 points and nine rebounds, leading a makeshift lineup of Celtics who were never threatened in a victory over the Bobcats that not only clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, but set the NBA record for biggest single-season turnaround.
Hawks 92, 76ers 85: At Philadelphia, Joe Johnson scored 22 points, Josh Smith added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Atlanta built a big lead and held off the 76ers.
Marvin Williams contributed 18 points for the Hawks.
Wizards 99, Bulls 87: At Chicago, Brendan Haywood scored a career-high 25 points, Caron Butler added 18 and Washington beat the Bulls.
Antawn Jamison missed his second straight game with a sprained right shoulder and Gilbert Arenas rested his surgically repaired left knee for the Wizards.
Kings 118, Nuggets 115: At Denver, Kevin Martin scored 36 points despite missing Sacramento’s shootaround with the stomach flu, and the Kings dealt a blow to the Nuggets’ playoff plans with a surprising victory.
Nets 99, Raptors 90: At East Rutherford, N.J., Vince Carter scored 21 of his 32 points in the second half and New Jersey beat struggling Toronto, snapping a four-game losing streak and keeping its faint playoff hopes alive.
Any combination of Nets’ losses or Hawks’ wins totaling two will eliminate New Jersey from postseason contention.
