White Sox 5, Tigers 3: At Detroit, Jim Thome hit an RBI double in the sixth inning for the White Sox’s only hit off Dontrelle Willis, who walked seven in five-plus innings, and Chicago beat the Tigers. Detroit, the only winless team in the major leagues, is 0-5 for the first time since the Tigers dropped their first nine games in 2003 en route to an A.L.-record 119 losses.
Angels 2, Rangers 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Jered Weaver pitched seven scoreless innings, Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick had run-scoring hits and Los Angeles beat Texas. Weaver allowed three hits, walked none and struck out six.
Blue Jays 10, Red Sox 2: At Toronto, Frank Thomas hit a two-run homer, David Eckstein had three RBIs and the Blue Jays used a six-run eighth inning to beat Boston for the sixth straight time dating to last season.
Rays 6, Yankees 3: At New York, Jonny Gomes homered and drove in four runs against Andy Pettitte to help Tampa Bay double up the Yankees. New York slugger Jason Giambi departed in the fifth inning with a sore left groin. He is day to day.
Twins 6, Royals 4: At Minneapolis, Justin Morneau hit his first home run of the season and drove in four runs, and Livan Hernandez won his second straight start as Minnesota topped Kansas City. Morneau, Minnesota’s one true slugger, was 1 for 17 heading into his second at-bat of the day before launching a shot to right-center to put Minnesota up 3-2.
Athletics 6, Indians 1: At Oakland, Calif., Dana Eveland allowed one run in seven innings in his Oakland debut and the Athletics roughed up C.C. Sabathia in a win over Cleveland.
