Area roundup: CC Spokane’s James sets record

Chanel James broke a 23-year-old school record in the 100 meters and Community Colleges of Spokane and Clark College teamed to win the first Washington-Oregon dual track and field meet Saturday at Spokane Falls CC.

The Sasquatch and Penguins won both competitions over Lane and Mt. Hood, the men prevailing 366.5-331.5 and the women winning 353-340.

James clocked 11.90 seconds to drop .13 from the CCS standard set in 1985 by Raetha Garnett. She also won the 200 in 24.91 and the long jump in a lifetime-best 19 feet, 2 inches. On the men’s side, jumper Kurt Williams (22-3/4 long, 46-91/2 triple) and thrower Dave Howard (55-81/2 shot, 164-9 discus) were double winners.

“Washington State freshman Jeshua Anderson lowered his 400-meter hurdles time to 49.66 seconds but hit the final hurdle and was edged by former UCLA standout Kyle Erickson by .02 at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational in Los Angeles.

The Cougars also got runner-up finishes from high jumper Ryan Deese (6-83/4), high hurdler Robert Williams (14.26) and shot putter McKenzie Garberg (46-8).

Baseball

Gonzaga closer Cody Martin fired 21/3 shutout innings to help the host Bulldogs nail down a 5-4 win over the Santa Clara Broncos (18-13, 4-4) in West Coast Conference play at Washington Trust Field.

Martin notched his seventh save of the season to tie a school record set 26 years ago by Randy Bostic.

Starter Matt Fields (5-2) earned the victory. Tyson Van Winkle and Ryan Wiegand each drove in two runs for GU (18-15, 2-5).

“The Pacific Lutheran Lutes used a 10-run third inning to spark a 23-5 win and a doubleheader sweep over the Whitworth Pirates in Northwest Conference action at Merkel Field.

Robert Bleecker tossed a complete-game, 10-hit shutout in the opener as the Lutes (16-12-2, 13-9) won 4-0.

Mitch Ramsey, Mitch Nelson and Chad Flett all hit solo home runs for the Whits (11-21, 10-16) in the nightcap.

“The CC Spokane Sasquatch and visiting Blue Mountain Timberwolves split an NWAACC doubleheader.

Blue Mountain (11-21, 4-8) rallied from a three-run deficit to win the opener 13-11.

Mark Purser carried the Sasquatch (13-11, 4-7) to a 7-1 win in the second game. Purser allowed one run in seven innings and singled and tripled to give him five hits in five at-bats on the day.

Rowing

The University of Washington women won five of six races, but it was Washington State that took the main event again as the eighth-ranked Cougars beat the No. 4 Huskies to the finish to win an unprecedented third consecutive Apple Cup trophy in the schools’ annual dual regatta on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.

WSU finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:16.41, 5 seconds ahead of UW.

“Gonzaga’s men won three of four races at the George Washington Invitational Regatta on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

The Varsity 8+ clocked a 5:52.7 over 2,000 meters to edge Virginia by 1 second in the afternoon race. The Bulldogs placed second in the morning race with a time of 5:41.2. Virginia won in 5:38.7.

The Bulldogs Novice 8+ won twice. In the morning race, GU finished in 5:51.9, nearly 9 seconds ahead of runner-up Virginia. In the afternoon tilt, GU clocked in at 5:52.9, nearly 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Virginia.

Softball

The Whitworth Pirates used a pair of fast starts to post a 12-4, 5-4 sweep of the visiting Lewis & Clark Pioneers (2-27, 2-20) in Northwest Conference play at Marks Field.

The Pirates (11-16, 8-7) used an eight-run first inning to breeze to a win in the opener and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap en route to a victory.

Halley Cey went 3 for 3 and scored three runs to pace the Whits in the first game. Morgan Thomsen drove in a pair of runs for the Pirates in the second game.

“The CC Spokane Sasquatch rolled to a 3-0, 6-2 sweep of the visiting Yakima Valley Yaks (12-18, 7-11) in NWAACC action.

Ashley Fargher homered to back Shantel Booker’s four-hitter in the first game. Haley Bauman’s solo homer and Jessie Utt’s three-run shot powered CCS (16-10, 10-4) in the nightcap.
