Favre finds way back

Associated Press

If Brett Favre did report to the Packers as expected Monday, none of the fans and media members staking out several entrances to Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., managed to catch a glimpse of him.

The team announced Monday afternoon that Favre had been reinstated and returned to the Packers’ active roster, as was expected.

Coach Mike McCarthy had scheduled a news conference for 6:30 p.m. PDT to talk about his plans for Favre. But the news conference was called off because McCarthy was still meeting with Favre.

Meanwhile, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled that he found no violations of league policy in the Packers’ tampering complaint against Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota coach Brad Childress denied reports that the Vikings have talked to the Packers about a potential trade for Favre.

Smith apologizes for scuffle

Carolina receiver Steve Smith apologized and talked about winning back the respect of his Panthers’ teammates, coaches and fans. A battered Ken Lucas accepted Smith’s apology and discussed his impending surgery.

A subdued, apologetic Smith returned to practice three days after the three-time Pro Bowler punched Lucas in the face at practice, and two days after he was suspended without pay for the first two regular-season games.

“I’m completely wrong,” Smith said in a 4-minute meeting with reporters.

Bradshaw will serve more time

New York Giants halfback Ahmad Bradshaw said he has to serve another 30 days in jail after the season for violating terms of a probation he received as a 15-year-old.

Bradshaw said the 30-day sentences resulted from an underage drinking offense at Virginia in 2004 and a petty larceny charge at Marshall in 2006. He had been placed on probation in Virginia in either 2001 or 2002 as a juvenile.
