Surgery sidelines Contreras
White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras had surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles’ tendon on Monday and is expected to miss at least nine months.
Contreras left his start Saturday against the Boston Red Sox. Activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day, the 36-year-old right-hander crumpled to the ground while trying to cover first base in the second inning.
He writhed in pain, clutching his ankle, and needed help to walk off the field.
Contreras, who had not pitched since July 13 because of right elbow tendinitis, was 7-6 with a 4.54 ERA. D.J. Carrasco is penciled in to take his spot in the rotation, with Lance Broadway also a possibility.
Rays rookie Longoria out
The Tampa Bay Rays placed rookie All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria on the 15-day disabled list because of a right wrist fracture.
The move was retroactive to Friday.
The team recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Durham to take his place.
Longoria is hitting .278 and leads the Rays with 22 home runs and 71 RBIs.
Carpenter to be evaluated
Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter will return to St. Louis today to have his strained right triceps evaluated.
Carpenter was hopeful Monday of remaining on track for his next start, a day after he was removed from a game in Chicago. The team said in its medical report that Dr. George Paletta would evaluate the injury.
