WSU women down Dons
April Cook scored a career-high 21 points and fellow freshman Jazmine Perkins was named tournament most valuable player as Washington State (3-2) beat tournament host San Francisco 82-71 in the team’s final game Sunday at the odwalla Classic in San Francisco.
Perkins added 11 points Sunday to the 28 points she scored in the first game of the tournament, and had eight rebounds in each game. Cook was named to the all-tournament team.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. The teams swapped leads twice before Perkins’ free throw at 7:46 put Washington State up for good at 19-18.
The Dons cut the deficit to three points in the second half, but the Cougars went on a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach, with Cook scoring eight of those points.
Seniors Heather Molzen (12 points) and Katie Appleton (11) also scored in double figures for the Cougars, and Appleton pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
•The Huskies held a two-point lead midway through the second half, but Clemson broke the game open en route to an 85-67 victory over Washington (2-3) to win the Husky Classic in Seattle.
Sami Whitcomb led the Huskies with 18 points, including 12 in the second half. Michelle Agustavo added 15 points, and Mollie Williams had 12.
It was the first time in four years Washington did not win its own Husky Classic.
Clemson’s Lele Hardy, who scored 22 points, was named MVP of the tournament. Whitney Hood added 16 points for the Tigers.
The Huskies led 52-50 midway through the second half, but Clemson went on a 17-2 run to give the Tigers a 67-54 lead.
•Idaho used a strong second half to beat Cal State Bakersfield 75-62 to close out the San Luis Obispo (Calif.) Holiday Beach Classic.
Sophomore Yinka Olorunnife scored a season-high 23 points with seven rebounds for the Vandals (2-4) and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Idaho, which trailed most of the first half, turned a one-point deficit with 12 minutes left in the game into a 10-point lead five minutes later.
Men’s basketball
Zach Humphrey scored 16 points and Derek Gianukakis added 15 as Community Colleges of Spokane beat Southwestern Oregon CC 83-66 for fourth place in the Red Devil Classic in Longview, Wash.
Damal Neil had 10 rebounds to go with his six points as the Sasquatch pulled away in the second half after taking a three-point halftime lead.
Junior hockey
Eight Braves scored goals as Spokane beat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 8-1 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Chase Wharton scored and had three assists, and Michael Smith made 25 saves for the Braves.
