Whitworth upends Washington U.
Whitworth rallied from three separate double-digit deficits to upset ninth-ranked Washington University 73-68 Friday at the Whitworth Fieldhouse in the second game of the NBC Camps Whit Classic.
In the tourney opener, Whitman also used a comeback to knock off California Lutheran 74-57. Whitworth takes on Whitman tonight at 6.
Tiffany Corigliano led the Pirates with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cassie Pilkinton followed with 16 points and Leah Pomante added 10.
Corigliano hit a 3-pointer to put Whitworth ahead 61-60 with just less than 4 minutes to go. Washington had just one field goal in the last 5 minutes.
Washington State 68, Long Beach State 50: Jazmine Perkins and Katie Appleton sparked the Cougars early, combining for WSU’s first 15 points and a 15-4 lead.
Perkins led all scorers with 16 points, her fifth double-digit outing in six games this season. The freshman guard also had a game-high seven assists.
“It wasn’t about me scoring a bunch of points,” Perkins said. “It’s about getting a win, and whoever is open is going to get the ball.”
WSU improved to 4-2. The 50 points were the fewest allowed by WSU this season. The Cougars, who have won four consecutive games, host Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 2 p.m. Sunday.
North Idaho 99, Highline 40: The visiting Cardinals put five players in double figures as they cruised to victory at Des Monies, Wash.
Bianca Cheever and Marielle McKean each scored 19 points. Lindsey Stark had 18, Natalie Nichols finished with 17 and Kia Gibson chipped in 13. Nichols also had nine steals and seven assists.
CC Spokane 72, Bellevue 59: The visiting Sasquatch made a fast start hold up at the Everett Classic.
Three players scored in double figures, led by the 19 points of Kelsey Stillar. Richelle Daily and Andrea DePaolo added 13 and 11, respectively. Meghan Eisenmann led the Sasquatch’s dominance on the boards with 10 rebounds. CCS outrebounded Bellevue 41-33.
