Huskies advance to third round

Becky Perry notched a match-high 16 kills and the fifth-ranked Washington Huskies breezed to a 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 sweep of the Santa Clara Broncos in an NCAA tournament second-round volleyball match at Bank of America Arena in Seattle on Saturday.

Washington (25-4) will square off against the Utah Utes in a third-round match on Friday at 8 p.m. in Seattle.

Washington’s Jessica Swarbrick had four block assists on the night. She is now in third place on the school’s all-time list with 476. Teammate Tamari Miyashiro had 14 digs, while setter Jenna Hagglund picked up 30 assists.

Anna Cmaylo topped Santa Clara (18-10) with 13 digs.

Track and field

Four Eastern Washington University men qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships with their showing in the men’s triple-jump at the EWU Candy Cane Invitational in Cheney.

Cameron Moore won the event with a leap of 48 feet, 41/2 inches and three Eagles teammates claimed the next three places. Armand Hopkins (47-73/4) was second, followed by Kurt Williams (46-81/4) and Levi Knudson (45-3). Hopkins also qualified in the men’s long jump with a winning distance of 22-101/2.

EWU’s Stephen Praast and Adam Stewart finished 1-2 in the men’s high jump, both clearing 6-7. Chad Butorac qualified by winning the 55-meter dash in 6.56 seconds.

On the women’s side, Krystal Deyo qualified by winning the 55 dash in 7.11 and the long jump at 18-31/4. Shene Davis won the triple jump in 38-31/4 and finished second in the 55 (7.18) to qualify for both events. Sophia Malamura won the shot put with a qualifying mark of 45-3 and Nicole Luckenbach qualified with a 55-81/4 distance in the weight throw.

Junior hockey

Derek Yuskew totaled two goals and an assist to lead the Revelstoke Grizzlies to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Spokane Braves in KIJHL play.

Connor Olstad and Nick Redding scored goals for Spokane.
