U-Hi defense shuts down Highlanders
University’s record is deceiving, as visiting Shadle Park found out Tuesday night.
The Titans (1-2) made their season home debut a successful one by shocking last year’s second-place Greater Spokane League finishing Highlanders (2-1) 41-36 for their first victory of the year.
U-Hi had lost on the road to Gonzaga Prep and Lewis and Clark, but served notice by giving the Tigers a tough game.
Against Shadle, which is expected to chase the Tigers for league honors again this year, the Titans jumped off to a 13-5 first-quarter lead and kept it throughout. The closest Shadle came was to get within three points in the fourth quarter. The Highlanders had no one reach double figures.
Neither team made a 3-pointer, going a combined 0 for 25 beyond the arc.
Titans sophomore Amy Thornton led all scorers with 12 points.
East Valley 52, Ferris 45: The host Knights (3-0) remained perfect in the league thanks to twin scoring performances by Morgan Machester and Jenni White. Each had 17 points, all of White’s on field goals. The Saxons (0-3) were outscored in each of the first three quarters. Despite 17 points and 13 rebounds by Ashley Lockmer and 15 more points by Carrie Barber, they’re still looking for their first victory.
Gonzaga Prep 44, Mt. Spokane 39: The Bullpups (2-1) took an early lead, and despite 1-of-20 shooting from 3-point range, kept the visiting Wildcats (0-2) at bay. G-Prep jumped to a 12-5 first-quarter advantage and led 35-25 after three quarters. Sarah Manix finished with 14 points and Tia Presley scored 10. Mt. Spokane’s Megan Nelson had two of the team’s six 3-pointers.
Lewis and Clark 78, North Central 24: The Tigers (3-0) scored 67 points through three quarters at home, easing to their 36th straight win while beating the Indians (0-2). Jeneva Anderson led all scoring with 17 points and Hayley Hendrickson added 15 for the victors. Hendrickson had 10 rebounds and Devyn Galland five assists.
Mead 61, Rogers 19: Junior guard Jazmine Redmon finished with 17 points, seven steals and seven rebounds, and fellow guard Alisa Beard added seven steals as the home-standing Panthers (3-0) defeated the Pirates (0-3). Jessica Brett, perfect at the free-throw line in four attempts, added 10 points for Mead.
