Sasquatch men win 18th straight
Jordan Gregg tossed in a game-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds to power the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch to a 74-59 victory over the Walla Walla Warriors in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges men’s basketball action in Walla Walla on Wednesday night.
Eric Beal added 13 points, six boards and four assists, while Jon Clift scored 12 for the Sasquatch (24-1, 11-0), who remained unbeaten in league play. CCS has won 18 consecutive games.
Mark Minarik paced Walla Walla (8-17, 4-8) with 17 points.
The Sasquatch shot 51 percent from the floor for the game (23 of 45) and 60 percent (12 of 20) in the second half.
Women’s basketball
Ren Mallory made a layup with 5 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (18-5, 9-2) to a 68-67 win over the Walla Walla Warriors (20-6, 6-6) in NWAACC play in Walla Walla.
The winning play was Mallory’s only basket of the game.
Kelsey Stillar scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Sasquatch. Teammate Richelle Daily came off the bench to score 14.
Brittanie Toone scored 17 to pace Walla Walla.
Minnix joins Cougs
Robert Minnix, a longtime executive at the NCAA and most recently an associate director of athletics at Florida State, has accepted Washington State’s offer to become a senior associate athletic director, announced WSU athletics director Jim Sterk.
Minnix, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, attended Notre Dame and played in back-to-back Cotton Bowls in 1970-71 as a running back.
“I am thrilled to be returning to my native Northwest and become part of the Cougar family,” Minnix said.
Prior to Florida State, Minnix spent 20 years working for the NCAA – the final seven years as director of enforcement.
Football
The Spokane Shock announced that defensive back Rob Keefe has signed an AFL contract to play for the Philadelphia Soul.
Former Shock offensive lineman Brandon Leyritz, who played nine games for Spokane last season, signed an AFL contract with the Cleveland Gladiators.
Spokane added wide receiver Daniel Smith to its roster. Smith played at Idaho State, left after his junior year, and was released by the NFL’s Carolina Panthers in training camp this season.
