Vold guides Scotties
Taylor Vold scored a game-high 25 points and Marc Soelberg added 10 points and five rebounds to lead Freeman to a 51-44 victory over Chewelah in a District 7 1A tournament game Saturday night at Mead High School.
With the win, the Scotties (15-9) secured the second seed to the District 6/7 1A regional tournament and will host a game against the Caribou Trail League’s third seed on Tuesday.
Eric Thome and Mike Naccarato had 13 points apiece to lead the Cougars (8-16), who earned the third seed and will play at the CTL’s second seed on Tuesday.
In the 1A Pigtail game in Chelan, Colfax beat Omak 62-47 to earn the fourth and final seed to regionals. The Bulldogs (16-7) will play at the CTL’s top seed on Tuesday.
•Matt Zandbergen scored 18 points and Jared Descoteaux added 11 points and 11 rebounds as Northwest Christian (22-1) defeated Lind-Ritzville 51-43 in the opening round of the District 7/9 2B Regional Tournament at Mt. Spokane High School. Jamie Stevenson had 14 points and Cory Whitmore added 13 to lead the Broncos (18-6). … Also at Mt. Spokane, Reardan defeated Waitsburg 71-39. The Indians (21-3) will play Northwest Christian at 1 p.m. Monday at Mead for a state berth. The Cardinals will play Lind-Ritzville in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. Monday at Mt. Spokane. … T.J. Flett scored a game-high 23 points to lead Wellpinit past Asotin 49-42 at Mead. The Redskins took control in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 29-20. Wellpinit (16-9) advances to play St. George’s (21-3) at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mead with a state berth on the line.
•Travis Todd scored 17 points and James Glenn and Bryce Todd added 15 apiece as Odessa beat Curlew 63-58 in overtime in a loser-out, winner-to-state District 7 1B tournament game at Deer Park High School. Travis King added eight points and 14 rebounds for the Tigers (11-10), who outscored the Cougars 12-7 in overtime. Austin Mannick tallied a game-high 27 points to guide Curlew (17-8).
•Tyson Palmer scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Garfield-Palouse to a 57-45 win over Rosalia in the championship of the District 9 1B tournament at Walla Walla Community College. Scott Smith had 12 points and Michael Jacobs added 11 for the Vikings (19-4), who advance to the state tournament as the top seed. Garrett Hartung tallied a team-high 10 points for the Spartans (17-8), who earned the second seed to state. … Also at WWCC, Liberty Christian secured the third seed to state with a 66-44 win over Tekoa-Oakesdale. Mark Wilson had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Patriots (18-6). Josiah Tampien had 11 points and eight boards for the Nighthawks (16-9), who advance to the state tournament as the fourth seed.
•Drew Hansen scored 21 points and Dale Entel added 18 as Clarkston edged West Valley 73-71 in both teams’ final Great Northern League game of the season. Dustin McConnell had 16 points and Cody Brown added 10 for the Bantams (14-6, 12-2). Jordan Lupfer-Graham tossed in 25 points and James Cahalan scored 18 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Eagles (13-7, 9-5).
•Pairings have been set for the 4A regional tournament, which begins Friday. Greater Spokane League No. 1 Ferris will host Columbia Basin League No. 4 Walla Walla at 7:30 p.m. GSL No. 2 Shadle Park will host CBL No. 3 Eisenhower at Spokane Falls Community College at 7:30 p.m. GSL No. 3 University will play at CBL No. 2 Wenatchee while GSL No. 4 Central Valley will travel to CBL No. 1 Richland.
