Furious late rally falls short for Cougars

From News Services The Spokesman-Review

The Washington State women’s basketball team received career performances from Jasmine Williams and Ebonee Coates, but a comeback bid came up short as the Cougars fell 70-67 to Oregon Sunday at Friel Court.

Williams, a freshman guard, led the Cougars (4-21, 1-13 Pac-10) with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. Coates, a junior center, pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds, and nearly had her second consecutive double-double by adding nine points.

With 3 minutes, 15 seconds left in the game, the Cougars found themselves down by 13 points. However, an 11-0 WSU run, keyed by two 3-pointers from junior guard Katie Appleton, got the game back to within one at 68-67. The Cougars fouled Tamika Nurse, who hit both free throws to put the Ducks (11-15, 5-10) back up three with 20 seconds left on the clock. Appleton was able to get another 3-point attempt off that would have sent the game into overtime, but the shot didn’t fall and the Ducks escaped with the victory.

Washington 58, Oregon St. 53: Freshman Katelan Redmon (Lewis and Clark) scored 13 points, Andrea Plouffe added 10 points and Emily Florence pulled down 10 rebounds as the Huskies defeated the Beavers in Seattle.

The Huskies (11-15, 6-8 Pac-10) withstood a late second-half rally by the Beavers (10-16, 3-12) to sweep the Oregon schools in Seattle this week. They lost to the Beavers 68-64 on Jan. 17 in Corvallis, Ore.
