Cardinals have one wrestler left at nationals

The Spokesman-Review

The North Idaho College wrestling team didn’t fare as well as it had hoped during the opening day of the NJCAA national wrestling championships Friday in Rochester, Minn.

The seventh-ranked Cardinals sit in 13th place out of 27 Division I teams after the first day of competition. Only one NIC wrestler advanced into today’s action.

Sophomore Dino May, wrestling at 174 pounds, is the only Cardinal still in competition after finishing the first day with a 2-1 record.

May, the only member of the current NIC team with NJCAA experience, will face Nassau’s Dan Daddino in the consolations today.

May had a bye in the opening round.

In his first match, May recorded a pin over Minnesota West’s Dominick Oliver in 4 minutes, 47 seconds.

He lost to William Raney Harper’s Darius Williams 7-5 in his next match.

May responded with a 12-6 victory over Muskegon’s Taylor Cochran to stay alive for today’s action.

The best May can finish is third place.

Jordan Anderson (157), Steve Vasquez (184) and Tim Ofield (285) were the other Cardinals to win two matches.

They all finished with 2-2 records.
