The Tennessee Volunteers found out being No. 1 can be tougher than beating No. 1.

Shan Foster scored 32 points and No. 18 Vanderbilt knocked off top-ranked Tennessee 72-69 on Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn., one day after the Vols moved into the top spot in the rankings for the first time in school history.

Jermaine Beal added 17 points and Alex Gordon 11 as Vanderbilt (24-4, 9-4 Southeastern Conference) won its seventh straight. The Commodores moved into a tie with Kentucky for second in the SEC East, a mere game behind the Vols with three games to play.

Chris Lofton led Tennessee (25-3, 11-2) with 25 points. Tyler Smith, playing with the flu, had 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

(12) Indiana 72, Ohio State 69: At Bloomington, Ind., Armon Bassett scored 23 points and Eric Gordon added 17 to lead the Hoosiers (24-4, 13-2 Big Ten) past the Buckeyes (17-11, 8-7) for Dan Dakich’s first coaching victory at Assembly Hall.

Kosta Koufos led Ohio State with 21 points.

(15) Connecticut 79, Rutgers 61: At Piscataway, N.J., Jeff Adrien scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies (22-6, 11-4) to a victory over the Scarlet Knights (10-19, 2-14), Connecticut’s 11th win in 12 games.

Stanley Robinson, who had 13 rebounds, and Craig Austrie both added 18 points for the Huskies.

Missouri State 86, (20) Drake 83: At Springfield, Mo., Deven Mitchell scored 20 points and the Bears (15-15, 7-10 Missouri Valley) closed the John Q. Hammons Student Center with one of the most impressive victories in school history, holding off the Bulldogs (24-4, 13-3).

Missouri State broke out to big leads early in each half, then withstood a barrage of 3-pointers by Drake to beat the Bulldogs. Dale Lamberth added 16 points and the Bears shot 59 percent, making just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the charging Bulldogs.
