Gibbs yet to decide
So much for Joe Gibbs coming back next season with Jason Campbell as his starting quarterback. After Gibbs’ performance Monday, neither of those former certainties seem certain.
The coach was as evasive as could be when discussing his future with the Washington Redskins. Gibbs declined to say whether he would return for the final year of his contract – or even if he wanted to return – and said the matter would hinge on talks with Redskins owner Dan Snyder.
“Everybody’s situation will be taken into context here – including mine, and my future here and all that,” Gibbs said. “We’re going to start on it hot and heavy tonight.”
Gibbs is 31-36, including 1-2 in the playoffs, since he emerged from NFL retirement and his NASCAR career to sign a five-year, $27.5 million contract in 2004.
Owens’ availability uncertain
Terrell Owens was still limping on his sprained left ankle and his status for the Dallas Cowboys’ playoff game this weekend was uncertain, though some teammates expect him to play.
“Absolutely, we’re all counting on him playing,” Jason Witten said. “He’s a tough guy. Nobody wants it more than he wants it himself to get out there and play. He’s a quick healer, and he looked good out there, I thought.”
Coach Wade Phillips said Owens would be a “game-time decision.”
Pennington may remain a Jet
New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum thinks Chad Pennington will remain with the team next season and compete for the starting quarterback job.
Pennington, benched in favor of Kellen Clemens midway through the season, has expressed his desire to be a starter – whether it’s in New York or elsewhere.
“He’s under contract,” Tannenbaum said. “I expect him to be back.”
