Knoblauch summoned by Congress

Four-time All-Star Chuck Knoblauch was subpoenaed Tuesday by a congressional committee investigating steroids in baseball after he failed to respond to an invitation to give a deposition.

Knoblauch, who played for the New York Yankees, Minnesota and Kansas City, was asked to appear Thursday, the first of five depositions or transcribed interviews scheduled by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee prior to its Feb. 13 hearing.

•Slick-fielding shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and the Colorado Rockies closed in on a six-year contract with a club option for 2014.

Media reports have said the deal is worth about $30 million.

•San Diego general manager Kevin Towers agreed to a two-year contract extension that runs through 2010.

•Right-hander James Shields and Tampa Bay are closing in on a long-term contract.

•Reliever Octavio Dotel and the Chicago White Sox agreed on an $11 million, two-year contract, bolstering a bullpen that ranked among the majors’ worst last season.

Ryan takes award

Boston College’s Matt Ryan won the Manning Award, given to college football’s top quarterback.

The award is voted on by a panel of local and national media, as well as Payton, Eli, and Archie Manning. Florida’s Tim Tebow finished second.

•Mike Kelly retired after 27 years as coach at Dayton.

Extreme skier dies

An extreme skier died from injuries he sustained after jumping off a cliff in Salt Lake City, for a scene in a documentary film.

Billy Poole was flown by helicopter from the backcountry of Big Cottonwood Canyon to University of Utah Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m., hospital spokeswoman Vickie King said.

•Mario Matt of Austria won a World Cup night slalom in Schladming, Austria, overcoming a rain-slogged course for his 10th career victory.

•Germans Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy easily won the short program at the European figure skating championships in Zagreb, Croatia, earning a score of 70.36 points.

Gatlin appeals ruling

Olympic sprint champion Justin Gatlin has appealed his four-year doping suspension in an attempt to return to the track for the Beijing Games in August.

The notice was filed Monday to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the international body that has the final say in such matters.

•The University of Oregon has released a conceptual design for its $200 million basketball arena to replace venerable McArthur Court.

•Retiring basketball coach Dave Odom will receive about $320,000 from South Carolina after stepping down April 1. Odom had two seasons remaining on his contract.

•Lou Palmer, 75, a longtime announcer on radio broadcasts of the Indianapolis 500, died Saturday in Indianapolis.
