In brief: Top prize $9.12 million at poker’s main event
The top prize at the main event of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas will be $9.12 million this year, and 666 players will get some piece of a $64.3 million prize pool.
More than one-third of the tournament’s entrants entered the no-limit Texas Hold ‘em tournament Sunday, the last day players were able to register, pushing the field to 6,844.
The top prize of $9,119,517 is the second largest in the main event’s history.

Bernard takes Cup
Jeff Bernard won the Indiana Governor’s Cup hydroplane race in Madison, Ind., on the Ohio River on Sunday, outmaneuvering Steve David for his first career victory.
The victory made the 23-year-old driver from Kent, Wash., one of the youngest winners in the history of hydroplane racing. He piloted the Formulaboats.com of Decatur, Ind.
The hydros will be in Washington state later this summer — at the Tri-Cities on the Columbia River on July 25-27, and at Seattle on Lake Washington on Aug. 1-3.

Californians win tuneup
Wesley Piermarini and Elliot Hovey got a strong tuneup for the Beijing Olympics by winning the Double Sculls Challenge of the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames, England.
The pair from the California Rowing Club in Oakland beat Peter and Thomas Graves of Bantam Boat Club in Cincinnati by 1 1/4 lengths, repeating the outcome of the U.S. Olympic trials final.
“Olympic qualifiers Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor won the AVP Crocs Slam Boulder in Boulder, Colo. for their 15th straight tournament title.
They tied their own record for consecutive tournament wins. It was the 99th career title for May-Treanor.
“Bob Ackles, the B.C. Lions’ first water boy who went on to become the CFL team’s president and chief executive officer, died after having a heart attack in Surrey, British Columbia. He was 69.
