R-Hawks break through

Aaron Headrick drew a two-out walk and scored on pitcher Dorsey Ek’s throwing error as the Spokane RiverHawks defeated the Bend Elks for the first time in five tries, 3-2 in 11 innings at Avista Stadium in a WCCBL game Friday night.

Spokane had only five hits but scored two of its runs with the help of Bend’s two errors.

The RiverHawks tied the game at 2 in the eighth inning when Mark Purser’s double scored pinch runner Connor Moore from second.

Spokane’s other run came in the fifth to tie the game at 1 when Rob Folsom walked and eventually scored on an infield error.

Purser and Ernesto Ortiz each had two hits for Spokane.

Four Spokane pitchers combined to give up eight hits and five walks while striking out 14. Reliever Jake Hiatt pitched the final three innings for the win.

The teams (both 11-12) play again at Avista tonight at 6:30.

Soccer

Pete Peterson scored on a penalty kick in the 84th minute as the Spokane Spiders tied the Abbotsford Mariners 3-3 in a Premier Development League match at Spokane Falls CC.

Peterson was hauled down from behind in the box. The Mariners (5-6-2) had scored 2 minutes earlier.

John Prugh scored the Spiders’ other second-half goal while Ben Funkhouser scored in the opening half. Peterson and Matt Miller had assists.

The Spiders (2-10-2) are host to the first-place Vancouver Whitecaps tonight at 7.

Rodeo

Defending saddle bronc champ Sam MacKenzie of Jordan Valley, Ore., turned in the top score in the go-round at the Cheney Rodeo with an 81. See results in Scoreboard, C5.

The rodeo concludes tonight, starting at 8.

Volleyball

Renee Bordelon, a 5-foot-10 junior setter from Coeur d’Alene, is one of three additions announced by Washington State University.

Bordelon, a 2006 graduate of Lake City HS, played last season at North Idaho College and was second-team all-conference.

The other recruits are 6-1 middle blocker Emily Rooney, who played for new Cougars head coach Andrew Palileo for three years at South Dakota State, and 5-7 defensive specialist/libero Brianne Flach, a graduate of Indian Creek HS in Shabbona, Ill.
