Post-grunge experiment
Candlebox comes back with new album

At the end of every rock ’n’ roll dream is a greatest hits record.
So when Rhino Records decided to put out a Candlebox greatest-hits compilation during the band’s dormant period, guitarist Peter Klett thought, “Maybe it’s time to get the band back together.”
“It took a while to start at first,” Klett said during a telephone interview before a show in Atlanta. “You didn’t know what to expect; where do people fit in with where we are now? Does this person still feel this way about the music?”
Touring the old stuff was no problem once the Seattle grunge-era bluesy quartet got in the groove.
The real test is in the new album, “Into The Sun,” which came out Tuesday on Silent Majority/ILG Records.
The album maintains Candlebox’s blues-alt-rock style, but with added experimentation.
But is there still a place for that in a post-grunge world?
“There is absolutely no comparison to how it was with how it is now. Everything seemed to glow,” Klett said. “You know it’s validating to know you have enough musical success that someone would want to put out a ‘Best of…’ and that people are still craving the band.”
Candlebox appears tonight at 8 p.m. at Knitting Factory Concert House, 919 W. Sprague Ave. Tickets for the all-ages show are $22.50. Full bar with ID.
Fez thought it was ‘Tad Nugent’
Turning 60 this year, rock ’n’ roll immortal Ted Nugent has released more than 31 recordings, sold more than 35 million albums, has a Gibson guitar named after him and he sells his own brand of beef jerky.
Personal politics and controversy aside, The Nuge is a rocker of immortal proportions who will have played his 6,000th show before the year’s end.
Approximately show number 5,927 goes down Sunday at 4 p.m. at Silver Mountain. Tickets are $39.50-$49.50 through TicketsWest, www.ticketswest.com, (509) 325-SEAT.
Club hoppin’
•Leaders of the Seattle country music scene (bet you didn’t see that comin’) The Maldives (pronounced “mal-deevz” like the island nation) often appear as a nine piece band (with fiddle, accordion, banjo, and pedal steel added to the core rock and roll construct), conjuring Crazy-horse era Neil Young and The Band.
The front-porch aesthetic and ZZ Top beards reflect the dangerously genuine quality in the recordings and live show.
A must-see for fans of the genre, The Maldives come Sunday at 7 p.m. to Empyrean Coffee House, 154 S. Madison St., with support from Zac Fairbanks and the Booze Fighters and Lafayette. Cover to be announced.
•For more dogs day fun, 105.7 southern-rock-dirty-south-rap-reggae-soul band Rehab headlines a benefit show for SpokAnimal on Monday at 7 p.m. at The Alter Knit Lounge, 916 W. First Ave. Road dogs Heavy Mojo supports the bill.
The 21-and-older show is free. Tune into 105.7 FM The Peak for details.
