Former Red Sox catcher dies

BOSTON – Russ Gibson, a catcher on the Boston Red Sox team that went to the 1967 World Series, has died. He was 69.

He died Sunday in Swansea, Mass., after a long illness, the Red Sox said.

Gibson spent three seasons with the Red Sox and three with the San Francisco Giants before retiring after the 1972 season.
