Mead’s Furrer victorious in Hopes Match

Amanda Furrer, a junior at Mead, came back from a disappointing third place finish in the Olympic shooting Trials to win the Hopes Match, a junior competition in Pilzen, Czech Republic last weekend.

Competing against an international field, Furrer, 17, won Small-bore 3 Position, shooting 580 out of 600. She took third in Small-bore Prone, shooting 592 out of 600. In Air Rifle Furrer shot a 386 to finish 35th.

Furrer finished third in the women’s three-position small-bore rifle event at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. She scored 1,926.9 in three days of shooting at Fort Benning, Ga., making her the first alternate for the two berths on the U.S. team heading this summer to Beijing.

McClammer to Beijing

Chelsea McClammer, a member of Team St. Luke’s of Spokane, qualified for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing this summer in the 800 meters.

Shadle’s Brooks to Hall

Ron Brooks, head baseball coach at Shadle Park, will be inducted into the Washington High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame this winter.

Brooks’ career has included two Final Four appearances – in 1990 and 2003 – while approaching 300 wins in 24 seasons at his alma mater.

The announcement was made when he was coaching at the State All-Star series two weekends ago, during the fourth inning of a game at Parker Field in Yakima.

Brooks said he was flabbergasted and even now, “every time I say it I get chills. It’s pretty humbling company.”

He will join his former coach and predecessor, Jim Brown, in the Hall of Fame. Brown was inducted in 1993 and between them, said Brooks, they have coached 38 of Shadle’s 50 baseball seasons.

Among his accomplishments, apart from three Greater Spokane League titles, seven top-two finishers, numerous district playoff seasons and 282-221 overall record, was last summer’s renovation of Shadle’s Al K. Jackson Field.
