‘Black Gold’ follows three oil rigs in Texas
Tonight’s might-see
“Black Gold” debut, 10 p.m., Tru TV (formerly Court TV).
As prices soar, the search for Texas oil becomes more intense. This reality series follows three rigs.
The Longhorn, 60 years old, was brought out of retirement; it’s run by the crusty Gerald. The Viking is new and multimillion-dollar, run by the easygoing Wayne. Big Dog is run by Tim, 31, and error-prone.
This is a world in which digits, limbs and lives are lost. Men work hard, drink hard, make big mistakes. They are interesting people to follow.
Tonight’s might-see II
“So You Think You Can Dance,” 8-10 p.m., Fox.
As the finalists paired off for the first time, we saw just how serious these people are.
Top choreographers created demanding pieces in fresh genres. Hip hoppers went ballroom; modern dancers went classical. People tried ambitious things and mainly succeeded. Now there are 18 dancers left for this week’s round.
Other choices include
“OMG! Sextuplets!” 7 p.m., WE. Life transformed for Bryan and Jenny Masche, when they had six babies. This fairly interesting documentary ranges from high drama – medical crises, a “Deal or No Deal” appearance – to the orderly handling of 70 bottles a day.
“Help” (1965), 7 p.m., Sundance; or “Hairspray” (2007), 8 p.m., HBO. Musicals can be great fun sometimes. Try a jaunty old Beatles film or a vibrant new Broadway one.
“Another Day in Paradise,” 8:30 p.m. KSPS channel 7, KUID 12 and KCDT 26, and “Carrier,” 10 p.m., KSPS 7. “Carrier” is sometimes overwrought in style, but offers an interesting look at the lives – good and bad – of people aboard the USS Nimitz. Now that’s being rerun as a weekly series. First we get the new “Paradise” documentary, focusing on three Nimitz men, struggling with long-distance fatherhood.
“Criminal Minds” and “CSI: NY,” 9 and 10 p.m., CBS. These reruns are the only scripted shows on any of the big networks. In “Minds,” bodies have been buried in different states of decomposition; in “NY,” blood has been found on the Statue of Liberty’s crown.
