Chynoweth, 3 others elected to Hall of Fame

The late Ed Chynoweth, former Detroit Red Wings center Igor Larionov, ex-Edmonton Oilers star Glenn Anderson and former linesman Ray Scapinello have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Chynoweth, the former Western Hockey League commissioner, was elected in the builder category. He died this year on April 22.

“This is a tremendous honor for my father,” said his son Dean Chynoweth. “My father had a passion for the game of hockey and was committed to doing whatever it took to improve the game. Our entire family is very proud.”

Walker still ails

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker remained hospitalized with a concussion and a battered face Tuesday, one day after he was beaten, robbed and left unconscious on a Las Vegas street after a night of partying.

Police said a large amount of cash and some jewelry were taken from Walker, who suffered a moderate concussion and significant injuries to his face.

•Terrell Owens has been excused from the Dallas Cowboys’ mandatory off-season minicamp this week while dealing with a personal family matter.

•The Atlanta Falcons released safety Jimmy Williams, two years after trading up 10 spots to pick him in the second round of the NFL draft.

•Senator Arlen Specter said he won’t call for congressional hearings on the NFL’s investigation of the Spygate scandal.

Open ratings soar

Monday’s dramatic U.S. Open playoff between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate earned a 7.6 overnight rating and 20 share on NBC, the network said. That’s just 11 percent less than the 8.5 overnight rating drawn by Sunday’s fourth round.

It’s the highest rating for a Monday golf telecast in 30 years and a 90 percent increase from the last time the Open went to a playoff, when Retief Goosen defeated Mark Brooks in 2001.

•Coming off a top-10 finish at the U.S. Open, Camilo Villegas made more than $200,000 to win the two-day World Skins Game at Vernon, British Columbia.

Villegas made a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 14th hole for $127,800, then added another $97,800 in a playoff.

U.S. blanks Brazil

The United States edged Brazil 1-0 in the Peace Queen Cup in Suwon, South Korea, on a goal by forward Amy Rodriguez.

Rodriguez scored in the 41st minute, lifting the Americans to a 2-0 record. The U.S. plays Italy on Thursday.

Young sanctioned

Sprinter Jerome Young, already stripped of an Olympic gold medal and banned for life for a doping violation, has accepted more sanctions after admitting to using EPO and human growth hormone as far back as 1999. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said that Young has been disqualified from all competitive results since Jan. 1, 1999, and agreed to return a gold medal he won in the 400-meter run at the 2003 World Championships.
