Anderson speeds into track finals
Washington State’s Jeshua Anderson topped the preliminaries in the 400-meter hurdles in 50.19 seconds to advance to today’s final while fellow Cougar Marissa Tschida placed fourth in the women’s javelin final with a throw of 160 feet, 10 inches at the USA Junior Outdoors Track & Field Championships on Friday.
Amanda Peterso of Eastern Washington University placed sixth in the javelin at 152-10.
Chanel James of CC Spokane placed 16th in the women’s 100 prelims at 12.23 and did not advance.
Baseball
Houston Slemp’s one-out single drove home the winning run as the host Bend Elks (3-4 WCCBL) scored twice in both the eighth and ninth innings and rallied to defeat the Spokane RiverHawks (3-4) before 1,020.
Both teams had 12 hits with Aaron Headrick, Mark Purser, Cody Reeves and Connor Moore picking up two each. Logan Boyd homered for Spokane and Eric Renander had two RBIs.
Purser (1-0), who played center field until coming into relieve in the ninth, took the loss, giving up two hits and two walks and hitting a batter to bring in the tying run.
Golf
Ryan Benzel, tied for third after the first round of the PGA Professional National Championship, fell off the pace with a second-round 75 and is tied for 24th at 143 at Lake Oconee, Ga. Benzel, a Ritzville HS graduate, is the pro at Mill Creek CC (Wash.).
Kyle Kelly, a North Central HS graduate who is at Tamarisk CC in Rancho Mirage, Calif., shot a 74 and is at 146 and also made the cut. Missing the cut was Mark Gardner of Spokane (The Creek at Qualchan) at 152.
Scott Hebert of Traverse City, Mich., at 138, leads by one stroke.
