UI’s Brooks 2nd team All-WAC

University of Idaho junior guard Jordan Brooks earned second-team All-Western Athletic Conference and all-newcomer team honors as the 2007-08 WAC men’s basketball postseason award winners were announced Sunday.

Brooks is Idaho’s first all-conference honoree since Dandrick Jones during the 2004-05 season when the Vandals played in the Big West Conference.

“These awards speak for themselves as an accumulation of Jordan’s production throughout the WAC schedule,” Vandals coach George Pfeifer said. “His performance has aided our program in our coninuted climb in the conference standings.”

The All-WAC first team is led by Utah State senior guard Jaycee Carroll, who was also voted player of the year.

Boise State’s Greg Graham was named coach of the year.

Women’s basketball

WAC honors Madison, Olorunnife

The Western Athletic Conference’s all-women’s team was announced Sunday, with two Idaho Vandals receiving honors.

Sophomore Katie Madison earned her second second-team All-WAC honor and freshman Yinka Olorunnife was named to the all-freshman team.

Madison is the third-leading scorer in the conference, averaging 16.3 ppg.

Olorunnife is the conference top freshman rebounder, averaging 8.2 rpg in WAC play. She averaged 8.8 ppg in conference play.

Men’s basketball

Whits headed to Holland

The Whitworth Pirates (21-6) will play Wheaton College of Illinois (21-7) at 3 p.m. Friday in the sectional round of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament.

The game will be part of a doubleheader at Hope College in Holland, Mich. Top-ranked Hope (25-3) will play Ohio Wesleyan (22-7) in the second game.

Friday’s winners will play on Saturday for a berth in the Division III semifinals, which will take place March 21 at Salem, Va.

Whitworth defeated Occidental 83-75 on Saturday.
