The Slice

The Spokesman-Review

Mary Anne Will noticed The Slice’s reference to Mary Annes preferring to not be addressed as “Mary.”

She was pleased.

“I thought I was the only one who took such offense,” she wrote.

Of course, her situation has an added dimension. Her mother’s name is Mary. “The infamous Mary Will from Priest River,” said Mary Anne.

For the daughter, insisting on the full “Mary Anne” was a way of maintaining a separate identity.

That’s understandable.

Her dad was known to employ another technique, though. “My father once answered the phone and asked the caller if they wanted to speak to ‘Big Mary’ or ‘Little Mary,’ ” she wrote. “That went over well.”
