ASU moves to quarterfinals
James Harden had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists and teammate Jeff Pendergraph flirted with the NIT record for blocked shots to lead host Arizona State past Southern Illinois 65-51 in the tournament’s second round on Thursday night in Tempe, Ariz.
The young Sun Devils (21-12), left out of the NCAA field because of a weak non-conference schedule, will play a third straight NIT home game with a quarterfinal matchup Tuesday night against the winner of today’s Creighton-Florida contest.
The Salukis finished 18-15.
Pendergraph tied a school record with his eight blocks, seven in the first half. He also had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The NIT record for blocks is nine.
Syracuse 88, Maryland 72: At Syracuse, N.Y., Jonny Flynn had 23 points to lead four Syracuse starters in double figures as the Orange (21-13) advanced to the quarterfinals with a victory over the Terrapins (19-15).
Arinze Onuaku added 14 points and 14 rebounds for Syracuse, which will play the winner of Saturday’s second-round matchup between Massachusetts and Akron. Paul Harris added 19 points and Donte Greene tossed in 16.
The top-seeded Orange used a 15-5 spurt late in the second half to pull away from Maryland.
