Area roundup: Cougars top Zags
Washington State’s Chad Arnold worked six strong innings Tuesday as the host Cougars defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 6-2 in non-conference baseball action at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Arnold allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three. He received help from teammate Paul Gran, whose 2-for-4 performance included two RBIs.
The Cougars (15-7) opened up a two-run lead in the first inning as Gran drove in a run and later scored. Gonzaga (15-7) tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning, but the Cougs responded with three runs in their half of the inning. Gran’s RBI in the bottom of the seventh gave the Cougars insurance.
Mark Castellitto was a bright spot for the Bulldogs, reaching base in all of his plate appearances. He notched a double and two walks, was hit by a pitch, had an RBI and scored a run.
Golf
The Washington State women finished sixth at Oregon’s Duck (Eugene, Ore.) Invitational thanks to a second-place finish from Amy Eneroth (Mead High), who shot a 2-over-par 218. The University of Idaho had a strong showing at the tournament and finished fifth thanks to 12th- and 16th-place finishes from Kelly Nakashima and Amanda Jacobs, respectively.
In men’s action, Idaho and WSU each tied for eighth place. Idaho’s Colter Kautzmann recorded a 3-over 219 and WSU freshman Nick Ellis shot a 4-over 220 to lead their teams.
Softball
Whitworth (7-13) dropped a pair of 4-2 games in California, losing to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Claremont and to Chapman at Orange, Calif. Halley Cey and Lacey Kerr had three hits apiece on the day for the Pirates.
