Bethel AME celebrates 118th anniversary

Bethel AME Church, 645 Richard Allen Court, will celebrate 118 years of worship next week with a series of events.

The church is inviting the public to come to the celebration titled, “Watch and Pray.”

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the church will hold a service of music and spirit.

The church will welcome the Rev. Jimmy D. Pierce of Unspeakable Joy Christian Fellowship next Thursday at 7 p.m.

The youth of the church will present a special service April 4 at 7 p.m.

On April 6, the church will present a special service at 3:30 p.m. featuring its anniversary sermon and the Rev. David Johnson of Walker Chapel AME Church in Seattle.

Conferences and speakers

Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield St., will present its 32nd annual Northwest United Methodist Nikkei Conference Friday through Sunday.

The conference is a gathering of five historically Japanese American United Methodist Churches from Washington and Oregon.

The theme this year is “Got Plans? We make plans, but God gets the last word.”

The speaker will be the Rev. Howard Yoshida from Honolulu, who will also preach during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5607 S. Freya St., will host the seminar “Live Better … Live Longer” on April 6, 7, 9, 13 and 14 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The seminars will include a full meal each night.

Registration is required by April 5, and the cost is $50 per person and $25 for your guest. Register by Tuesday and save $5 per person.

•The Rev. Michael Himes, a theology professor from Boston College, will discuss “Catholicism and Culture: The Necessary Conversation” today at 7:30 p.m. in the Cataldo Hall Globe Room on the Gonzaga University campus.

Part of the university’s 32nd annual Flannery Lecture, Himes has written several books and articles, including “Ongoing Incarnation: Johann Adam Möhler and the Beginnings of Modern Ecclesiology,” and “Fullness of Faith: the Public Significance of Theology.”

Unity events

The Unity in the Community Players will present the play, “Steel Magnolias” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., April 4 at 7 p.m. and April 5 at 2 p.m. at the Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St.

Rummage sale

Trinity United Methodist Church, 1725 E. Bridgeport Ave., will hold a book and rummage sale Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Items for sale will include sheet music, records, pictures, household items, furniture and jewelry.
