At a glance: Stanford
Guards
All eyes gravitate to Candice Wiggins, the Pac-10’s all-time leading scorer, and rightfully so. But JJ Hones and Rosalyn Gold-Onwude, both 5-10 sophomores, are solid. All three can handle the ball, making it difficult to press the Cardinal. Hones leads the way with a 3-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and Gold-Onwude provided the clutch baskets when Stanford broke away from Pittsburgh.
Forwards, centers
All you need to know: Jayne Appel and Kayla Pedersen had 29 rebounds against Pittsburgh, the Panthers had 30. Both are steady scorers and Appel in particular can be prolific. In three NCAA games she has made 30 of 44 shots and scored 75 points.
Bench
The Cardinal can bring juniors Jill Harmon, 6-1, and Morgan Clyburn, 6-4, off the bench to help on the front line and 6-0 freshman Jeanette Pohlan works into the guard rotation.
Summary
The game has the potential to be a classic between two teams with 33-3 records, big, strong frontcourts and solid backcourts. Both teams are hungry after second-round exits last year and have a chip on their shoulder because they aren’t mentioned with the favorites as potential national champions (Maryland) or because they got snubbed in the seeding (Stanford). Will the stars shine in a battle royale or will an unsung hero be the difference-maker?
