Flett, Cey All-NWC for Pirates

Whitworth senior Chad Flett has been named to the 2008 All-Northwest Conference baseball team, and five teammates received honorable mention, the conference announced Monday.

Flett, a graduate of Mead who transferred from Community Colleges of Spokane, was selected for a utility position. He started 11 games (4-6 record) as a pitcher and started the rest at second base, outfield or as designated hitter. He batted .276.

Receiving honorable mention are Dan Ramsay, a junior catcher from Mead via Gonzaga University; Jon Whiteside, senior, shortstop from CCS; Mitch Ramsay, junior outfielder from Mead, selected as a designated hitter; senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Snell; and sophomore outfielder Dan Belet.

Also receiving honorable mention was outfielder Stew Davis of Linfield, a junior from Freeman and Central Valley, picked as a designated hitter.

•Gonzaga sophomore outfielder Drew Heid, who batted .558 in seven games, was named the West Coast Conference player of the week for a second straight week. He also drove in eight runs and scored 10.

Softball

Outfielder Halley Cey of Whitworth has been named to the 2008 All-Northwest Conference first team in softball for a second straight year.

Cey, a senior from Mead, led the Pirates in batting average (.407), hits (50), doubles (15) and runs scored (30).

Teammate Lacey Parry, a senior from Mead and Community Colleges of Spokane, was selected for a utility position on the second team.

Pirates infielders Lacey Kerr, a sophomore from Mt. Spokane; and Amber Fowler, a senior from Colville and CCS; and pitcher Jessie LaPlante, a senior from Lakeland and CCS, received honorable mention.

Golf

Jason Azzarito of Kettle Falls shot a par 72 for Community Colleges of Spokane in a two-pronged match in Richland.

The Sunday score earned Azzarito medalist honors in an Eastern Region match, which CCS won 304-309 over runner-up Columbia Basin.

In the Columbia Basin Invitational, which wound up Monday, Azzarito followed with a 77. His 149 tied for fifth. Bellevue and CBC tied for team honors at 597. CCS was third at 605.

•CCS won the women’s Columbia Basin Invitational, 504-512 over host CBC. Katie Sorenson led CCS with a 163.

Track and field

Three Idaho Vandals claimed Western Athletic Conference weekly honors.

Freshman Paul Dittmer (14.29 NCAA Regional qualifying time in 110 hurdles) is men’s track athlete of the week; junior Elvie Williams (26 feet, ¾ inch long jump) is men’s field winner; and senior Melinda Owen (school-record 13-7 1/4 pole vault) is women’s field winner.
