Pullman Police hand down recommendations against Roof

The Spokesman-Review

Pullman Police have recommended one second-degree assault charge and five fourth-degree assault charges against Washington State defensive tackle Andy Roof.

The recommendations, sent this week to the Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office, are the results of a weeklong investigation after Roof, 22, was arrested outside a house party April 16. Second-degree assault is a felony, whereas fourth-degree assault is a gross misdemeanor.

Police allege Roof assaulted – punching or head-butting – six people early that morning after he was refused entry into the party. Alcohol was involved, police say.

The second-degree recommendation stems from Roof’s alleged assault of a victim who suffered broken facial bones, said Pullman police Sgt. Dan Dornes. The other five recommendations are for Roof’s alleged assault on five other victims.

Roof’s future on the WSU football team was still undecided, football spokesman Bill Stevens said Monday. The coaches will take appropriate action after gathering enough information.

Baseball

Washington State scored seven runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and beat Brigham Young 13-7 in Provo, Utah.

Travis Coulter and Scott Suttmeier combined for five hits and seven RBIs for Washington State (25-20).

Sean McNaughton and Kasey Ko each went 3 for 5 for BYU (19-30).

BYU used four pitchers in the ninth inning.

Tennis

Darren Haworth, head coach of the Eastern Washington University men, was named the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year. The honor is the first for an Eastern Washington coach.

He led the Eagles to their best season since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1984. This year, Eastern Washington has set school records for wins (18), Big Sky wins (seven), winning percentage (.750 at 18-6) and winning streak (nine, from Feb. 2-March 8).

The Eagles men will play their first NCAA championship match at noon Saturday. Eastern Washington takes on No. 3 UCLA (21-1) in a first-round contest at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus.
