WSU pummels BYU
Shea Vucinich went 3 for 4 and scored a pair of runs and Jim Murphy belted his 12th home run of the season to propel the Washington State Cougars to a 12-5 victory over the Brigham Young Cougars (19-31) in non-conference baseball Wednesday in Provo, Utah.
Connor Lambert (1-0) notched his first win of the season for WSU (26-20) with 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
•The East Division-leading Wenatchee Valley Knights breezed to a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader sweep of the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch at Spokane Falls CC.
Zane Bator and Brandon Lehman hit home runs to power the Knights (34-5, 22-4) to a 10-4 win in the opener.
Curran Redal had four hits in the nightcap to lead the Knights to a 15-8 victory.
Cody Reeves had four hits in the two games for the Sasquatch (17-22, 8-18), including a double and a home run.
Track and field
Whitworth’s Brandon Howell qualified for the NCAA Division III championships in the 800 meters to highlight the Sasquatch Field/Distance Carnival at Spokane Falls – clocking 1 minute, 51.75 seconds to earn a return trip to nationals.
Ryan Weidman of the Bigfoot Track Club highlighted the throwing events by winning the javelin with a toss of 234 feet, 3 inches.
Football
The Washington State Cougars and Idaho Vandals each had a player make the Rimington Trophy spring watch list. The trophy is awarded to the nation’s top center.
WSU’s 6-foot-2, 310-pound redshirt junior Kenny Alfred was one of 42 players the committee selected.
Idaho junior Adam Korby (6-2, 292) also made the list.
The winner will be honored at a banquet in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 17.
