Sorenstam will retire

Annika Sorenstam will retire after the season, ending an LPGA Tour career in which she has won 72 tournaments to date and delivered a defining moment when she teed it up against the men on the PGA Tour. (See column, Page C6.)

“I think I’ve achieved more than I ever thought I could,” she said during a news conference Tuesday at the Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J. “I have given it all, and it’s been fun.”

The 37-year-old Sorenstam has hinted at retirement the past several seasons, saying she wanted to devote more time to her growing business and to start a family. She is engaged to Mike McGee, son of former PGA Tour player Jerry McGee.

“This would be very much like Annika to get on top and then quit,” said Judy Rankin, a Hall of Famer and television analyst.

Sorenstam said her final event would be the Dubai Ladies Masters after the LPGA Tour season ends.

“I’m leaving the game on my terms,” she said.

Seattle’s Tatupu a DUI suspect

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu was arrested during the weekend for investigation of drunken driving.

The three-time Pro Bowler was stopped early Saturday, Kirkland, Wash., police said. An arrest report said Tatupu had breath tests of .155 and .158 – the legal limit is .08.

The arresting officer wrote he saw a car driven by Tatupu speeding and changing lanes without signaling. The officer said he smelled alcohol, and Tatupu said he had not been drinking.

Tatupu’s car was impounded and he was taken to the police station for a breath test.

The Seahawks signed Tatupu to a $42 million contract extension in March.

Stuckey makes rookie 2nd team

Former Eastern Washington University standout Rodney Stuckey was named to the NBA All-Rookie second team.

The Detroit Pistons’ No. 1 draft pick last year missed the first 25 games of the season with a broken left hand but came back as a key backup for the Central Division champions.

Stuckey started Wednesday’s Game 5 of the playoff series against Orlando while starter Chauncey Billups recovers from a hamstring injury.

Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant and Seattle teammate Jeff Green were named to the first team, along with Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks, Al Thornton of the Los Angeles Clippers and Luis Scola of Houston.

Joining Stuckey on the second team are Jamario Moon of Toronto, Juan Carlos Navarro of Memphis, Thaddeus Young of Houston and Carl Landry of Houston.

NBA coaches voted on the team.
