Braves 8, Brewers 1: At Milwaukee, Mark Teixeira homered and drove in four runs to lift Atlanta over the Brewers. Chipper Jones went 2 for 4 with two walks to raise his major league leading average to .420.

Padres 5, Nationals 2: At San Diego, Jody Gerut hit a three-run homer with one out in the eighth inning to give the Padres a win over Washington.

Pirates 7, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Jason Bay and Xavier Nady each had a homer and a double leading Pittsburgh over the Reds.

Mets 8, Dodgers 4: At New York, David Wright hit two home runs off Brad Penny and the Mets dampened Joe Torre’s return to New York by defeating Los Angeles.

Cardinals 3, Astros 2: At St. Louis, Kyle Lohse carried a shutout into the seventh inning and Albert Pujols homered to help the Cardinals beat Houston.

Cubs 8, Rockies 4: At Chicago, Alfonso Soriano’s two-run single capped a late charge as the Cubs beat Colorado. Chicago scored five runs in the last two innings.

Giants 4, Diamondbacks 3: At Phoenix, Randy Johnson fanned nine to tie Roger Clemens for second in career strikeouts (4,672), but Arizona’s bullpen blew a lead and Randy Winn’s ninth-inning home run gave San Francisco a victory.
